Vaping Vs. Smoking
There are many differences between vaping and smoking. These differences range from how they work, the sensation you feel, the ingredients they contain, the health effects, and the price.
What is Vaping?
Vaping is when you use an electronic device to deliver nicotine to your body. Every vape has four components:
Device - The device is where the battery is placed. This battery is what powers the rest of the vape.
Tank - The tank is what holds your flavored e-liquid.
Coils - The coils are filters for your vape, they are placed inside the tank.
E-liquid - The e-liquid is the flavoring.
This flavor can contain nicotine if you would like. The battery for any device is what sends power to the coil forcing it to heat. The coil now soaked in the e-liquid uses the heat to evaporate the e-liquid. The e-liquid turns to vapor and is inhaled from the mouthpiece of the vape.
What is Smoking?
Smoking is when you inhale the smoke created by burning tobacco leaves. Every cigarette contains tobacco along with many other chemicals. When you light a cigarette, the tobacco begins to burn creating smoke. The smoke is then inhaled to deliver nicotine to your body.
How is Vapor Different from Cigarette Smoke?
A vape can give you a similar sensation as smoking a cigarette. It can also present a sensation of its own, this all depends on what vape device you are using. There are many devices that are created to resemble a cigarette. These devices will have a tighter draw when you smoke and will have less vapor compared to more advanced devices. Other vape devices that are designed for intermediate or advanced users will not resemble a cigarette. Instead these devices will have more vapor, more flavor of the e-liquid, and no harsh throat hit otherwise found in a cigarette. A cigarette also contains many more chemicals than a vape, these contribute in creating this harsh throat hit.
What Ingredients are found in E-juice and Cigarettes?
E-liquids for vapes contain 4 main ingredients:
Vegetable Glycerin (VG) - This is found in most of our everyday foods like dairy products, baked goods, and many condiments.
Propylene Glycol (PG) - This is also found in our day to day products like dressings, soft drinks, popcorn, and toothpaste.
Flavoring - Additive used to put artificial flavors in to the e-liquid.
Nicotine (optional) - Synthetic form of nicotine. Many e-liquids can be bought with a zero nicotine option. These are helpful to further reduce the negative health effects of nicotine on the body.
Some of the ingredients found in a cigarette are:
Tobacco - Tobacco leaves are burnt and the smoke created is then inhaled.
Tar - A substance that is the result of condensed tobacco. It collects in your lungs and can cause cancer.
Carbon Monoxide - A gas that is created when the tobacco is burned. This gas has no color or smell. As it enters the bloodstream it tampers with how the heart and blood vessels work.
Nicotine - A chemical derived from tobacco leaf. Once entered into the bloodstream it increases blood pressure and heart rate.
A cigarette contains many other chemicals called carcinogens. Carcinogens are a result of the chemical reactions caused by the burning of tobacco. These carcinogens are chemicals like lead, ammonia, and formaldehyde amongst many others. Several of the chemicals found in cigarettes cause cancer, heart disease, and lung disease. Second hand smoke inhaled from cigarettes can also cause these health issues while vaping has no second hand effects.
Is a Vape Cheaper than a Cigarette?
The initial cost of a vape will be more than that of a cigarette however the long term costs will be much lower. There are many parts to consider when calculating the price of vaping. The price of the device you purchase depends on whether you are looking for a beginner, intermediate, or advanced device. You wont need to purchase another device until you are looking to upgrade. Now there are the coils and flavors you have to purchase to continue using the device. You must replace your coils every week or two.
For example, let's say you smoke half a pack of cigarettes a day. A pack of cigarettes will cost you $15 and will last you two days. Meaning every month you will spend $225 on cigarettes and in a year you will spend approximately $2,700. Now if you wanted to switch to vaping and you purchase our Aspire Zelos 2.0 kit which is $74.99 plus the e-liquid to use it with which is $24.99. You're looking at an initial cost of about $100. You will need to replace the coils about every 10 days depending on how often you use the device. The replacement coils will be $15.99 for a pack of 5. This means that every year you will spend about $583.63 on replacement coils. Moving on to e-liquid, you will likely need a new bottle of juice every 3 weeks that is 18 bottles of e-liquid a year. The price of e-liquid for a year would be approximately $450. The total cost in a year for you to replace half a pack of cigarettes a day with vaping will be approximately $1,133.63 including the initial cost. Therefore if you switch to vaping you are saving about $1,566.37 every year.
