Learn How To Prime Your Coils
Posted on November 03 2019
When using your vape device you will notice after a number of days the vapor does not contain as much flavor as it did in the beginning. Following that you will notice an almost burnt taste from your vapor. This means that the coil for your device is now burnt and must be replaced.
Before you install another coil into your device you should prime the replacement coil. This will play a major part in optimizing your vape experience.
What Is A Coil?
First you need to know what the coil is. The coil is a “filter” installed in every vape device. The coil is made up of cotton wick and wire placed inside a metal cylinder.
Your vape device battery heats the wire in the coil. The wire then heats the cotton. The cotton, soaked with e-liquid vaporizes the e-juice to create vapor. A coil that is not properly primed will create a burnt like flavor.
There are two types of coils; sub ohm coils and MTL (mouth to lung) coils. Sub-ohm coils are coils that have a resistance lower than 1.0ohm. MTL coils are those that carry a resistance higher than 1.0ohm. To prime either of these coils is equally important. However the methods used to prime them are a little different.
Follow These Steps To Correctly Prime Your Sub-ohm Coil:
1. Install the new coil
Installing the replacement coil on to the tank will give you a better hold on the coil and will prevent e-liquid from getting on your fingers.
2. Saturate the cotton
First look for circular openings on the coil that expose the cotton, this is where you will add e-liquid. One by one, add a drop of e-juice to each circular opening you find. You may also add a drop in the center of the coil where cotton and wire are visible.
One drop on the exposed cotton may be enough for smaller coils like Aspire Nautilus Coils. For larger coils like the ones used in the Smok TFV16 Tank will require more drops of e-liquid to prime the coil.
You will know you have added enough e-liquid when the cotton does not immediately absorb the e-juice anymore.
Be careful to not over saturate the cotton. This will cause liquid to enter your mouth when vaping.
3. Take some dry hits
Re-assemble your tank, fill it with e-liquid, and attach it to your device. Then, without pressing the fire button inhale from the mouthpiece as if you are vaping. This will pump e-liquid into the coil and help it to be absorbed by the cotton.
Let your device sit for 5 to 10 minutes. This will ensure that the cotton is fully saturated in e-liquid.
5. Break in the atomizer wire
Saturating the cotton is key, however, to enhance the performance of the coil you will need to break in the wire. To break in the wire of your coil adjust your wattage to lower than recommended. After a couple drag increase the wattage to what is recommended for the coil you are using. This will further prime the coil and will keep it from burning due to high wattage.
How To Properly Prime Your Mouth To Lung Coil
Mouth to lung coils are fairly simple to prime. This is because they are much smaller than sub-ohm coil. Unlike a sub-ohm coil you wont need to add drops of e-juice to your MTL coil. All you have to do is install your replacement coil and fill your tank with e-juice. Then wait, let your tank sit for 5-10 minutes. This will be enough to saturate the cotton of a MTL coil. Take a couple dry hits and its ready for use!
Why Should You Prime Your Coils
- Prevents your new coil from burning after a couple hits
- Provides a more rich and intense flavor
- Components of the coils last longer when broken in and prepared
